The Heart In Summer

The heart in summer feels passionately,
Breaking the ties between motivation and reason,
To enter a world of splendor and love.
Spirits and perceptions are dominant.

Yet, summertime often brings agony.
It is a time of rivalry and revolution.
The summer heart often finds oneself,
A stranger. The price of callousness.

Time shifts slowly with toil and sweat.
Youthful memories balance bliss and contentment.
Feel swimming and sailing. Music.
See, hear, touch the magnificence around.

The heart in summer knows well,
The river is deep and the passage broad.
Unlock the poetry and be. Laugh.
Summer is long and not to be forgotten.

Silence

Quietness echoes in soft morning light,
Showing the coming day with stoic poise.
Appearing cautiously not to excite,
This time is not about clamor and noise.

Silence is water and hope and routine,
The practiced calm of one's personal space.
Stillness is self-sought solitude. Serene.
A landscape and comfortable sense of place.

At an unpretentious level, one asks,
Might I ought to be getting on with it?
Successful men's days are raucous with tasks.
Captured noise is defiantly earsplit.

True silence is found in the ability,
Of claiming elusive tranquility.

The Heart During Winter

In Winter, the heart holds reflection,
Knowing the solitude of self-determination.
It looks for echoes and significance,
In the exchange of a familiar hand.

Yet, wintertime draws one inward.
Beckoning firelight warms a hope within.
The winter heart lies snug inside,
Revisiting a day’s sunny ski slope.

Now is the time to discover meaning.
Defying control. Fostering consciousness.
Lifting viewpoints. Raising awareness.
Assessing plans for the future.

The heart in winter longs for rebirth,
To peer through the dark for a reason,
To ask and question. The Why.
To seek out a coming season's identity.

We, of the Individual

We, of the individual, possess a creative brain,
Voracious intellectual inquisitiveness,
In spite of basic function.

We, of the individual, have a memory,
A supremacy to reason and sway,
In spite of absentmindedness.

We, of the individual, formulate resolutions,
With a capacity to be subtle,
In spite of bad habits.

We, of the individual, possess potential,
A power to realize that potential in actuality,
In spite of the limits endured.

Ode to the Professional Services Marketer

Inside this whirlwind box,
Come chosen words from text.
Thwarting the pressure of time from clocks,
Vigilant, venturesome, (sigh) vexed.

To quote an old professor,
“It’s ‘sheet’, but kind of nice.”
Encouragement from the chief oppressor,
“Well, just come down in price.”

The thing about that is this,
It is not just about a sell.
Mere honest words can bridge an abyss,
To ameliorate clientele.

Marketing is the conduit,
To tell the truth. To provide.
Linking ours, to theirs, to a formidable fit,
To Make! To create with pride!

It is you, our fearless Rainmaker,
Entrusted with our time.
Those things you say, those things you hear,
Marketer words can only rhyme.

Our process graphs the real you,
Highlighting the needs of them.
Side by side. An adventure for two.
A Project! Our World! A Gem!

So, hold up your torch. It is our fire.
Be great. Be honest. Forthright.
Guide them to you via what they desire,
With our message derived by that light.

The Heart During Spring

In spring, the heart seems limitless,
Knowing no boundaries of soul.
It’s busy with thought and activity,
And hungers to leap all anew.

Yet, springtime tenders insecurity.
Cruel cold fronts blowing hearts back to winter.
The wild spring heart tethered to dreams,
Often flooded, thwacked back in retreat.

Now is the time to get things in order.
Design schemes. Create goals and ideals.
Mend that that has been torn.
Test the resiliency of being.

The heart in spring has a challenge,
To follow the beat and the Spirit,
To see and to test. Study and appraise.
To prepare for life and love in the summer.

Ode to the Grape

Deep within a sense of place,
Our region, terrior, A.V.A.,
A round, near perfect, juicy embrace,
Of an orb to cause a soiree.

Tenderly squished by bladder press,
Or punched by paddle and pole,
These winemakers, nay, artists profess,
Labors of love. They shall extol.

Extensions of a miracle, squeezed.
Acidic. Earth. Alive.
From these spheres, the Gods appeased,
A complex nose to revive.

Autumn’s toil turns fiery kiss,
With a swish, a sniff, and a taste.
Elements in the glass reminisce,
Of past years. We are graced.

The spirit thirsts for answers, facts,
Among a throng of friends.
With moments in time, a place to relax,
This earthly splendor transcends.

So with glass in hand ponder this,
The brilliance from the vine.
Offer up a smile, a kiss,
A toast. Enjoy this wine.

In Seeking the Answer or the Question

Love lives now,
In a fragile place, in a fragile time, with fragile steps.

Love breathes now,
In quiet talks, in quiet moments, with quiet whispers.

Love dreams now,
In deep sleep, in brilliant light, with open eyes.

Love works now,
In labor of, without complexities, with pride.

Who among us has ever dreamed of a love,
Based on truth, complete with honesty, as equals?

Open Doors

My mom likes to quote that age old saying, “When God closes a door, He opens a window” or something to that affect. I’ve a difficult time hearing that saying as the timeliness of its utterance usually sucks coupled with the fact it rarely helps me see through to any truth. It still hurts when a door is slammed on you whether God did it or not. I’m not one to crawl through windows as a typical answer to my problems so I’m not keen on the solution much.

Geography poses a problem here, too. It depends on which side of the door/window I'm standing. Am I outside looking into a house? Or am I inside looking to get out? Typically, locks on doors are on the inside, so I can’t see a problem with a closed door if I’m already safely inside someplace. If outside, I don’t desire to have a ‘breaking and entering’ charge on my record.

You see my problem.

However, I do concede to Mom (and maybe God) the intention of what she is trying to communicate. I get the message.

So, in honor of Mom and those doors all over the world, I wrote a simple poem.
At first glance, all are doors wide open,
With endless possibilities each day.
Through years, one finds, no door’s sovereign.
False opens tend to look some that way.

Soon, doors once open seem closed,
By time or by fate or by choice.
The truth is so rarely disclosed,
Yet, that last open door is your voice.

The hard part is hearing the thing.
The ring of the right thing to do.
Opportunity as a threshold for change,
Now a place to restart again new.

Birthday Drive

This highway rocked of craters and boulders
Has wound around unto a new road.
It is rife and rippling with frustrations and rage.
Yet, the love and the calm of a cruise.

The rearview mirror reveals the many
Lefts and rights and the wrongs.
Only the horizon tempts with a rising sun
If I can stay within the guardrails of sanity.

I hold no regrets. Although, I have heart aches.
I get past them, around them, and through them,
Steering clear of them by looking ahead.
Tunnel vision forward. There’s no more what could have been.

I’ve always identified the family man, me.
I was one before family became true.
I wonder if I should change self-perception,
When they’re half the time not with you.

On this day on the morning commute, alone and quiet,
I wonder if the man I used to be, my younger self,
Could understand the path I have become.
That I no longer follow that map anymore,
That now I navigate my way better without one.

Life's Lyrics 13 - Lucky to Know You

Luke Reynolds is now leading the band Pictures and Sound, a previous Life's Lyrics. Before P&S, he was the front man for a band called Blue Merle. Lot's of words here I identify with, repeat and sing in my heart ... moving forward. This is my poetry, if I had written these lines....
Friday morning all alone
One by one the stars
each say goodbye
Yeah pictures and a thousand words
A thousand miles turning into song

And I want you to know
I feel lucky to know you
Cut open my heart
And you'll see that it's true
I want you to know
I feel lucky to know you
I feel lucky to know you

Yeah summer fades into fall
And with it
Came the writing on the wall
So I sent a thousand letters on the
Backs of silver angels
through the sky

And I want you to know
I feel lucky to know you
Cut open my heart
And you'll see that it's true
I want you to know
I feel lucky to know you
I feel lucky to know you

I took a drive it's what I do
And wrote another song (poem) for you
The things we want
The things we crave
We have no choice the choice is made

And I want you to know
I feel lucky to know you
Cut open my heart
And you'll see that it's true
I want you to know
I feel lucky to know you
I feel lucky to know you
I feel lucky to know...

Friday morning all alone
And one by one
The stars each say goodbye

Codependent - A Work of Fiction

Lunch yesterday was at the office kitchen table. Being Friday, there was a lot of talk about the weekend plans sprinkled amongst the usual talk of who was eating what and who wanted to share this dressing and have a bite of that tuna concoction. I was the lone male at table of mostly slightly young(er), single women sprinkled with a couple of married moms. The women are aware I am divorcing and dating and that I am eligible, so to speak. Thus, I made an attempt to just eat my lunch, read my newspaper, and stay stealth.

I’m not going to recreate the exact conversation, just the highlights. I’m not that talented a writer and my memory for exact speech and styling a little foggy on a Saturday morning. But, amongst furtive glances to gauge my reaction, there was a fear being thrown around under the word “codependent”. Again, I buried myself in the paper.

Funny… Codependent. Is it an insult? It’s like it implies desperation, clinginess, and a palpable, pathetic persona.

“I just can’t see him again." ... "He drove me crazy with the always hanging at my place, eating all my food, calling me all the time, the constant IMing, and emailing stupid stuff." ... "He has codependent written all over him.”

I tried to wipe the capital “C” from my forehead before anyone saw it glowing red.

Their gist was crystal: It is bad to be reliant on another person for emotional support and, yes, love. These well educated women all agreed it was a sign of weakness. They shared stories, stories of men with the character flaw of wanting to be involved. And those stories spiraled downward with a pathetic picture of needy, incapable men with little value but for sex and a subject for gossip. The women portrayed themselves as self-sufficient, self-actualized, and strong. Dependence on another was all bad while the resemblance of Ayn Rand in pure female form, all good.

Now, I get this ideal. I’m rather Randian myself in my beliefs of the individual and self. But I couldn’t help but feel their thundering acknowledgements and “you go girls” to each other was counter productive, as if proving how independent they could be toward their potential mate made their bonds stronger somehow. Yet, I swear it wasn’t more than last week that I heard the exact opposite musings, “We had such a great time and he STILL hasn’t called me. No texting. No email. Nothing.” Or, “It’s his poker night. You’d think he would want to be with me on a Friday night.” And the, “I’ll use it as some quality alone time to catch up on my Soaps on TiVo.”

I guess you could say I’m confused. But I’m not. Extremes are becoming much more apart of my awareness in the human daily conflict that is this life. And it makes for great lunch time drama (no TiVo required). I think it is folly to think we can meander through this complex maze without the help and love and guidance and problems and issues brought about by others. I guess my solution here is that it would help if we all just admitted it outright.

I’ll admit it. I’m better with someone in my life than as a lone bachelor. I’ve always known that. I’m a good bachelor, too. I’ve been that guy before and succeeded that way in life. But, I don’t find a single thing wrong with wanting a certain person in my life who spends a chunk of her time wanting the same. If you share quality time, naked or clothed, with someone special I’d hope some sort of attachment follows suit. That isn’t weakness. That is strength. I’m stronger because of her. I am more confident. I’m. Just. Better.

“Mud! Mud!” I look up to a half dozen women looking at me stare at my food. A few snickers and giggles emerged from the other end of the table.

“I’m sorry. I zoned out,” laughing at myself and my day dream state. I clearly tuned them out. “What did you ask me?” I begged as I put my empty plate on top of my paper and sat up a little straighter.

“It must be nice to be on your own again. Do all those boy things without all the responsibilities. Are you enjoying all that guy stuff?” repeated the basic group questioning. I was surprised at the forwardness, honestly.

I smiled. “Oh, I’m not much of a bachelor these days. I’m dating just one, special girl. I guess you’d say I have a girlfriend.”

I’d caught them by surprise. There were a few, deep blinks and a silent swallowing of food as they stared at me at the end corner of the table waiting for more of an explanation. These strong, independent, professional engineers/architects and women weren’t prepared for me to contradict them. And I was about expose their collective façades.

“Um,” I paused and put my food down. I leaned back in my chair. “She inspires me to write poetry. I buy her flowers on as many Friday’s as I can and I think she likes that. I know the exact color of her coffee and to go lightly on the cilantro when I make her fajitas. And you know what, I like all that stuff. And I like learning more. The key, I think, is finding someone else who feels the same as you do and wants to be there on all the good stuff and the bad and still wants to be there, no matter what. I don't think we are codependent. We're too new. But I don't think codependent is a bad word at all.”

"Yeah. Well I wish my guy felt that way." ... and "Yeah, well, maybe." ... and "Hmmm. Mud, you are not normal."

Okay. I can work with that.

Light for Tomorrow

Light should be personal. Our own. Mine.
Its spectrum not influenced or touched
by the hands of others. Resigned.
Ours. Beyond us, not a shared clutch.

I come to you with all that I bring.
Mad with light. Etching deep shadows.
Let them all see it here. To those I sing,
who need to peek into our tomorrows.

Yet it is early. It is our dawn.
And I know not all of this light.
From where it derives. All redrawn.
I ask no explanations of night.

Tomorrow, when true light is just this,
no more dark obstacles to stumble,
just a beam from our lips. A kiss,
light-speed, play, and a tumble.

Ode to the Lime

From within a tiny flower,
emerging, glimmering, by moon,
a round, near neon meteor shower,
harvested none to soon.

Tenderly pierced by serrated blade,
through pungent exocarp of jade,
exploding pulp one should evade,
teeter totters now displayed.

Pieces of a miracle, squeezed.
Acidic. Sweet. Alive.
From the hemispheres, the Gods appeased,
this fragrance does revive.

Cathedral spears perched above foam,
waiting a push and a plunge,
to a secret, ritualistic home
(salted chips to act as a sponge).

This mixture with the agave blue,
like drops upon an altar,
the icy waves combine, imbue,
this nectar can not falter.

So, when in hand, consider this.
The brilliance, the sublime.
Take a slice, a smile, a kiss,
pause, enjoy this Lime.

Only That

If not for you, I am but your dream. Only that.

Yet now, it seems, I have you,
at peace with your dreams within mine.
Love and hope and pain can all sleep, anew,
like twirled, lit ferris-wheels at night, combined.

If not for you, I am but your dream. Only that.

Singularly, Lover, sleep with our extremes.
Together, through places the thump and thought go,
delicate fingers pry open clenched themes,
to rest, open palmed, a release to bestow.

If not for you, I am but your dream. Only that.

7.28.2008

And, Now ...

Then ...

Take my hand, I’d say, and no one knew,
Where, or to what extent the pain,
No flowers or sonnets with notes to chew,
Only an opened wound, a stain.

I tried it again. Again. Take my hand, pleading,
And few understood the hollow calendar moon,
Or the silence of the daily bleeding,
Or, how to begin, to break out of the cocoon.

And, Now ...

This is why, when hearing this voice, stating out,
Take my hand, that internal echo is a sign,
A season no longer in anguish from drought,
The love, the turbulent release of cork-suppressed wine.

That pouring out from touch of digits vowed,
In my mouth the taste of tannin and fire,
Birds of paradise and verse allowed,
The hurt replaced with open desire.

And, Now ...
